Legal basis
This notice is based on the amended Electronic Communications Act (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 109/2012 – ZEKom-1), entering into force in early 2013. It includes new rules relating to the use of cookies and similar technologies for storing information or accessing information stored on a user's computer or mobile device.
What are cookies?
A cookie is a small text file that is transferred to a user's computer when they visit a website and typically contains:
the name of the server from which the cookie was sent,
the lifespan of the cookie, and
a value – usually a randomly generated unique number.
The cookie itself does not contain or collect any information. If the server reads it together with a web browser, this can help the website to provide user-friendly services, for example, to recall previous purchases or data about a certain user’s account. Only the server that sent the cookie can read and use this cookie.
Thus, on a website which you can trust, cookies can enrich the experience. Alternatively, cookies are also used in ways that impose on an individual's privacy. Cookies can be stored for different periods: only for the duration of your browsing session, or much longer.
Temporary or session cookies
The cookies come to ‘life’ the moment a user opens the web browser until the moment they end the session and close the browser. Websites use them to store temporary information, such as items in a shopping cart, to assure greater security in online banking, etc. Since those cookies are stored for a short time, their invasion of user privacy may be reduced.
Persistent or stored cookies
These remain stored even when a user ends a session and closes the browser. Websites use them, for instance, to store information on registration, page language settings, but also to build user profiles and analyse website traffic. Persistent cookies can remain on your computer for days, months, even years.
First-party cookies
First-party cookies are from the site being viewed by a user and can be permanent or temporary. Websites use these cookies to store information that will be reused the next time the user visits this site.
Other cookies
Third-party cookies come from other, partner websites (for example, those that display ads on the original website, or measure traffic). In this way, third parties may collect information about users from different websites and use them for different purposes, from advertising to analytics to improving their products. These cookies represent a big intrusion into a user’s privacy.
